Carbonate camp mining news. It is a mistake to suppose that the Iron Hill constitutes all there is of the Carbonate camp, as there are at least half a dozen locations that have been extensively prospected and developed and show up good ore bodies, the owners of which, although poor men, have done wonders in the way of development, and if it were possible to sell the ore they can take out, would soon, with the capitol thus obtained, astonish the owners of the belt mines.
    December 6, 1883

    In regard to: Carbonate.

Dick Richards sends us the following from the Carbonate camp: "Nothing new of any great value has been discovered in this camp since last summer, and it is not likely that there will be with the present mode of working. "The Iron Hill company have spent plenty of money to find a large body of ore of an unknown extent, if it had been spent elsewhere except in that little water hole or prospect shaft, we may call it. They could have drifted into the Utica ground with a drift of 550, and not over 600 feet under their heaviest croppings of ore and acquired 100 feet greater depth than the bottom of their present shaft, at a cost of not over $5,000 nor less than $4,000, which would be a permanent and servicable roadway for ore and waterway for some years to come, and a far better method to prospect the property than the present one. A prospector, led by surface indications, would never have sunk the shaft where it now is. I shall stop, as it is none of my business. Nevertheless, as good a company and faithful officials as the Iron Hill parties are, backed by prompt and energetic stockholders, and local, without any foreign or outside aid, they deserve the greatest success. Add more judgment to the economy, gentlemen, and you will have it. Dick Richards"
